Burn Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation is an essential and integral part of the treatment of burns. It is not something which takes place following healing of skin grafts or discharge from hospital; instead it is a process that starts from day one of admission and continues for months and sometimes years after the initial event.
At Ascot Rehab you will have access to our whole team to work with you through this part of your journey. We provide innovative treatment options to make your rehabilitation journey meaningful to you and purpose built to meet your needs medically, physically, functionally and emotionally.
What one of our patients said: “I was in hospital for so long and did not want to be in another hospital. But Ascot was not like that. It was more like my home. I felt looked after and listened to and people really worked with what I liked to do. I suddenly realised I was going to actually get better. What a team!!”
Burns rehabilitation is provided by a multidisciplinary team, putting the patient at the centre and when appropriate, their family.
Burns rehabilitation incorporates the following aspects of care:
- Physical
- Psychological
- Social
It is common for burn patients to experience difficulties in one or all of these areas following a burn injury. Burns can leave a patient with severely debilitating and deforming contractures, which can lead to significant disability when left untreated.
The aims of burn rehabilitation
The aims of burn rehabilitation are to minimise the adverse effects caused by the injury in terms of maintaining range of movement, minimising contracture development and impact of scarring, maximising functional ability, maximising psychological wellbeing and maximising social integration.
